The Delaware Chicken was developed in the 1940s by George Ellis and Arthur Jones in Delaware. They aimed to create a breed that would excel in both egg production and meat quality. To achieve this, they crossed Barred Plymouth Rocks, New Hampshire Reds, and Sussex chickens.

The Delaware Chicken is a medium-sized bird with a well-rounded body. It has a single comb and wattles that are medium in size. The plumage of the Delaware Chicken is primarily white, with black barring on the neck, tail, and wings. The beak and legs are yellow.

This breed is known for its calm and friendly temperament, making it a popular choice for backyard flocks. It is also a good forager and adapts well to different climates.

Egg Production[edit | edit source]

Delaware Chickens are good layers, producing around 200-280 large brown eggs per year. They start laying at around 5-6 months of age and continue to lay consistently throughout their productive years.

The Delaware Chicken is also valued for its meat quality. The birds grow at a moderate rate and have well-developed breasts, making them suitable for both broilers and roasters. The meat is flavorful and tender, making it a favorite among poultry enthusiasts.

Despite its historical significance, the Delaware Chicken breed faced a decline in popularity in the mid-20th century due to the rise of commercial hybrid breeds. However, efforts have been made to preserve and promote this breed. The Livestock Conservancy has listed the Delaware Chicken as a "recovering" breed, and various breeders and enthusiasts continue to work towards its conservation.
