History

Delray Beach was originally inhabited by the Jaega Native American tribe. The first non-indigenous settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, establishing a small farming community. The town was incorporated in 1911 and named after the Detroit neighborhood of Delray, which in turn was named after the Mexican-American War's Battle of Molino del Rey.
