Denominación de Origen (Mexico)[edit | edit source]

The Denominación de Origen (DO) in Mexico is a certification granted to certain products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. This concept is similar to the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in France and the Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) in Italy. The DO status is intended to protect the cultural heritage and traditional production methods of these products.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of Denominación de Origen in Mexico was established to protect the unique characteristics of certain products that are inherently linked to their geographical origin. The first product to receive this designation was Tequila, which is perhaps the most internationally recognized Mexican product with a DO status. Over the years, other products have been added to the list, each with its own unique attributes and cultural significance.

Criteria for Denominación de Origen[edit | edit source]

To qualify for a Denominación de Origen, a product must meet specific criteria:

  • Geographical Origin: The product must originate from a specific region in Mexico.
  • Quality and Characteristics: The product must have qualities or characteristics that are essentially due to its geographical origin.
  • Traditional Methods: The production methods must be traditional and specific to the region.
