Derek Pattinson
Derek Pattinson (31 March 1930 – 10 October 2006) was a prominent British Anglican priest and Church of England administrator. He is best known for his role as the Secretary-General of the General Synod of the Church of England, a position he held from 1972 to 1990.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Derek Pattinson was born on 31 March 1930. He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth and later attended St John's College, Cambridge, where he studied Theology. He was ordained as a deacon in 1954 and as a priest in 1955.
Career[edit | edit source]
Pattinson began his ecclesiastical career as a curate in Grimsby. He then served as a vicar in various parishes before moving into administrative roles within the Church of England. In 1972, he was appointed as the Secretary-General of the General Synod of the Church of England, a role he held until his retirement in 1990. During his tenure, he played a significant role in the modernization and restructuring of the Church's administrative framework.
Contributions[edit | edit source]
As Secretary-General, Pattinson was instrumental in the implementation of several key reforms within the Church of England. He worked on the revision of the Church of England's liturgy and was involved in the discussions leading to the ordination of women as priests. His administrative acumen and dedication to the Church earned him widespread respect and recognition.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
After retiring in 1990, Pattinson continued to be active in church affairs and various charitable organizations. He passed away on 10 October 2006.
