The Deseret News is a prominent daily newspaper published in Salt Lake City, Utah. Established in 1850, it is one of the oldest newspapers in the western United States. The newspaper is owned by the Deseret Management Corporation, which is a for-profit arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).

History[edit | edit source]

The Deseret News was founded on June 15, 1850, by Willard Richards, who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church. The name "Deseret" comes from the Book of Mormon, where it is used to mean "honeybee." The newspaper was initially published as a weekly, and its first issue was printed on a small press brought across the plains by Mormon pioneers.

In its early years, the Deseret News served as a vital source of information for the settlers in the Utah Territory. It provided news, editorials, and information on local events, as well as religious content aligned with the teachings of the LDS Church.

Content and Editorial Stance[edit | edit source]

The Deseret News covers a wide range of topics, including local, national, and international news, politics, business, sports, and culture. It is known for its focus on family values and issues pertinent to the LDS Church. The newspaper often features articles on religion, ethics, and social issues from a perspective that aligns with the teachings of the LDS Church.

The editorial stance of the Deseret News is generally conservative, reflecting the values of its ownership. It emphasizes topics such as family, faith, and community, and often provides a platform for discussions on moral and ethical issues.

Digital Presence[edit | edit source]

In addition to its print edition, the Deseret News has a significant digital presence. Its website, deseret.com, offers a wide array of content, including news articles, opinion pieces, and multimedia content. The digital platform allows the newspaper to reach a global audience and engage with readers through social media and other online channels.

Ownership and Management[edit | edit source]

The Deseret News is owned by the Deseret Management Corporation, which is part of the LDS Church. The newspaper operates under the direction of a board of directors and is managed by a team of editors and journalists who are responsible for its day-to-day operations.
