Destroyer is a type of warship that is fast, maneuverable, and long-enduring, designed primarily for escort duties and to defend larger ships in a fleet or convoy from submarines, aircraft, and other surface threats. The term "destroyer" itself originates from the late 19th century as a shortening of "torpedo boat destroyer", a vessel intended to defend against and destroy torpedo boats.
