Deutschland (also known as Germany) is a country located in Central Europe. It is the most populous member state of the European Union. Germany is bordered by Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands to the west.

Germany's history dates back to the times of the Roman Empire. The country has been a key player in many significant historical events, including both World Wars. After World War II, Germany was divided into East and West Germany, which were reunified in 1990.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Germany is located in Central Europe and is bordered by nine countries. The landscape varies from the Northern Lowlands to the Central Uplands and the Alpine Foreland in the south.

Germany has the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world by nominal GDP. It is known for its high level of innovation, strong industrial base, and well-developed social market economy.

Germany has a rich cultural heritage with contributions to literature, music, and the arts. The country is known for its beer and sausage, as well as its traditional festivals like Oktoberfest.

Germany has a universal multi-payer health care system. It is known for its high standards of health care and its emphasis on preventative care.

Education[edit | edit source]

Education in Germany is overseen by the states and is compulsory from age 6 to 18. The country has a strong emphasis on vocational training and higher education.
