Dewey County, South Dakota

Dewey County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,301. Its county seat is Timber Lake. The county was created in 1883 and organized in 1910. It is named for William P. Dewey, Territorial surveyor-general from 1873 to 1877.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Dewey County is located in the north-central part of South Dakota. It is bordered by Corson County to the north, Ziebach County to the east, Stanley County to the south, and Potter County to the west. The Missouri River forms the county's southern boundary.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 5,301 people, 1,699 households, and 1,243 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 74.2% Native American, 23.5% White, 0.1% Black or African American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. 1.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Healthcare in Dewey County is primarily provided by the Indian Health Service (IHS), a federal health program for American Indians and Alaska Natives. The Cheyenne River Health Center located in Eagle Butte, SD, serves the residents of Dewey County.

Cheyenne River Health Center[edit | edit source]

The Cheyenne River Health Center is a 13-bed facility that provides a variety of health services, including inpatient, outpatient, dental, and mental health services. The center also offers community health services, including public health nursing, health education, and environmental health services.

Moreau-Grand Electric Cooperative[edit | edit source]

The Moreau-Grand Electric Cooperative in Timber Lake provides emergency medical services to Dewey County residents. The cooperative has a team of trained emergency medical technicians who respond to medical emergencies in the county.

Education[edit | edit source]

Education in Dewey County is provided by the Timber Lake School District and the Dupree School District. The districts offer education from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Dewey County is served by U.S. Highway 212 and South Dakota Highway 63. The county also has several county roads and rural roads.
