Dick Zimmer (born August 16, 1944) is an American politician and attorney who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from New Jersey. He is known for his work on tax policy and his advocacy for the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Zimmer was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Hillside, New Jersey. He attended Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. He then attended Yale Law School, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1969.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Zimmer began his political career in the New Jersey General Assembly, serving from 1982 to 1987. He was then elected to the New Jersey Senate, where he served from 1987 to 1991.
In 1991, Zimmer was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing New Jersey's 12th congressional district. He served three terms from 1991 to 1997. During his tenure, Zimmer was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, where he focused on tax policy and fiscal responsibility.
Legislative Achievements[edit | edit source]
Zimmer is perhaps best known for his role in the passage of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, which aimed to reduce taxes and simplify the tax code. He was also involved in efforts to reform welfare and reduce government spending.
Later Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving Congress, Zimmer returned to private law practice. He also remained active in politics, running for the United States Senate in 1996 and 2008, though he was not elected.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Zimmer is married to Marfy Goodspeed, and they have two children. He is known for his interest in history and has been involved in various historical preservation efforts.
