Diploma
Diploma is a certificate or deed issued by an educational institution, such as a college or university, that testifies that the recipient has successfully completed a particular course of study or confers an academic degree. In countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, the word diploma also refers to an academic award.
History[edit | edit source]
The word "diploma" comes from the Greek δίπλωμα (diploma), which means "folded paper". The term was used in ancient Greece to refer to a type of official document that was folded in two. In the Roman Empire, the word diploma came to refer to a type of official document that conferred certain privileges or rights.
Types of Diplomas[edit | edit source]
There are several types of diplomas, including:
- High School Diploma: This is typically awarded to students who have completed the required coursework and credits for a high school education.
- Undergraduate Diploma: This is awarded to students who have completed a specific course of study at the undergraduate level.
- Postgraduate Diploma: This is awarded to students who have completed a specific course of study at the postgraduate level.
- Diploma in Medicine: This is awarded to students who have completed a specific course of study in the field of medicine.
Diploma vs Degree[edit | edit source]
While both a diploma and a degree signify the completion of a specific course of study, there are some differences between the two. A degree is typically a more comprehensive course of study that requires a longer period of time to complete. A diploma, on the other hand, is typically a shorter course of study that focuses on a specific skill or field of knowledge.
