Diptera

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Diptera is an order of insects that includes flies, mosquitoes, gnats, and midges. This order is characterized by a single pair of wings on the mesothorax and a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Members of the Diptera order are diverse in size, form, and habits. They have a single pair of wings on the mesothorax and a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax. The mouthparts are adapted for piercing, lapping, or sucking, and the larvae are legless and maggot-like.

Classification[edit | edit source]

The Diptera order is divided into two suborders: Nematocera and Brachycera. Nematocera includes mosquitoes, gnats, and midges, while Brachycera includes flies.

Importance[edit | edit source]

Diptera are of significant importance in many ecosystems as pollinators, decomposers, and as a part of the food chain. However, some species are also vectors for diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus.
