Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research (DMAPR) is an apex body in India dedicated to the research and development of medicinal plants and aromatic plants. It operates under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), an autonomous organization under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. The DMAPR is pivotal in enhancing the productivity, quality, and commercial viability of various medicinal and aromatic plants, which are crucial for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.

History[edit | edit source]

The Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research was established to address the growing demand for medicinal and aromatic plants in India and to harness their potential for the economic development of the country. Recognizing the rich biodiversity and the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants in India, the government aimed to institutionalize research and development efforts in this sector.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary objectives of the DMAPR include:

  • To conduct basic and strategic research for developing technologies to enhance the productivity and quality of medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • To conserve the genetic resources of medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • To develop and promote sustainable farming practices.
  • To coordinate with national and international agencies for the promotion of medicinal and aromatic plants.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

The DMAPR undertakes a wide range of research activities, including genetic improvement, cultivation practices, pest and disease management, post-harvest technology, and value addition. The directorate also focuses on the conservation of endangered species and the documentation of traditional knowledge related to medicinal and aromatic plants.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

The DMAPR is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for conducting research in various aspects of medicinal and aromatic plants. These include advanced laboratories, experimental farms, a herbarium, and a library. The directorate also has a repository of germplasm collections of various medicinal and aromatic plants.

Outreach and Extension[edit | edit source]

The DMAPR plays a significant role in the dissemination of knowledge and technologies related to medicinal and aromatic plants to farmers, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. It conducts training programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns to promote the cultivation and utilization of these plants.

Achievements[edit | edit source]

Over the years, the DMAPR has made significant contributions to the field of medicinal and aromatic plants research in India. It has developed improved varieties of several plants, standardized cultivation techniques, and introduced sustainable farming practices. The directorate's efforts have led to an increase in the production and quality of medicinal and aromatic plants, contributing to the growth of the herbal industry in India.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

Despite its achievements, the DMAPR faces several challenges, including the threat of genetic erosion, the need for more efficient and eco-friendly cultivation practices, and the challenge of meeting the increasing demand for medicinal and aromatic plants both domestically and internationally.

Future Directions[edit | edit source]

The DMAPR aims to continue its research and development activities with a focus on biotechnological interventions for the improvement of medicinal and aromatic plants. It also plans to strengthen its outreach and extension activities to ensure the wider adoption of its technologies and practices.
