Discovery Institute

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Discovery Institute is a non-profit public policy think tank based in Seattle, Washington, best known for its advocacy of the intelligent design (ID) theory. The institute was founded in 1990 by Bruce Chapman and George Gilder.

History[edit | edit source]

The Discovery Institute was founded in 1990 as a non-profit educational foundation and think tank. It was named after the HMS Discovery, the ship that explored the Puget Sound in the late 18th century. The institute's primary work involves the promotion of intelligent design and its implications in the natural sciences, public policy, and culture.

Intelligent Design[edit | edit source]

The Discovery Institute is best known for its advocacy of intelligent design, a theory that proposes that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection. The institute's Center for Science and Culture (CSC), formerly known as the Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture, is dedicated to the promotion of this theory.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

The Discovery Institute and its intelligent design advocacy have been widely criticized by the scientific community, which overwhelmingly accepts evolution as the explanation for the diversity of life. Critics argue that intelligent design is not a legitimate scientific theory but a religious belief, and that the institute's activities represent an attempt to introduce creationism into public school science curriculums.
