Disenchantment is an American adult animated fantasy comedy television series created by Matt Groening, known for his previous works The Simpsons and Futurama. The series is produced by The ULULU Company for Netflix, featuring a medieval fantasy theme. It premiered on August 17, 2018.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Disenchantment follows the story of Bean, a rebellious and alcoholic princess, her naïve elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. The series is set in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, and the plot explores their misadventures as they tackle various challenges and uncover hidden mysteries about their world.

Characters[edit | edit source]

  • Bean - The main protagonist, a hard-drinking young princess.
  • Elfo - An overly optimistic elf from the cheerful Elfwood, who is fascinated by human suffering.
  • Luci - Bean's personal demon, tasked with encouraging her worst impulses.
  • King Zøg - Bean’s father and the ruler of Dreamland.

Themes and Reception[edit | edit source]

Disenchantment deals with themes of freedom, identity, and self-discovery, often through the lens of satirical humor. The series has been noted for its subversion of traditional fantasy tropes and its critique of societal norms.

Critically, Disenchantment has received a mixed response. Some reviewers have praised its humor and thematic depth, while others have criticized it for a perceived lack of direction in its overarching narrative.

Production[edit | edit source]

The series is animated by Rough Draft Studios, which also worked on Futurama. Its distinctive animation style is similar to Groening's other series, but with a unique medieval twist that incorporates darker and more sophisticated elements.

Release[edit | edit source]

Disenchantment was released by Netflix, with its first season premiering in 2018. Subsequent seasons have continued to explore deeper aspects of its characters and the fictional world of Dreamland.
