Dive Bar

A dive bar is a colloquial or informal term for a disreputable bar or pub. Such bars may also be referred to as neighborhood bars, where local residents gather to drink and socialize. Individual bars may be considered to be disreputable, sinister, or even a detriment to the community.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "dive" dates from the 19th century, originally referring to a substandard and squalid living environment. The term was later applied to bars that were seen as disreputable or seedy.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Dive bars generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere—they are often referred to by local residents as "neighborhood bars," where people in the community gather to drink and socialize. The clientele of a dive bar is typically composed of the local community, and the drink menu may be limited to beer and liquor. The decor is often minimal, and the establishment's amenities generally lean towards the functional. The floors may be covered in sawdust, and there may be a pool table or jukebox.

In popular culture[edit | edit source]

Dive bars have been recognized in popular culture, appearing in numerous films, television series, and songs. They are often depicted as places where the working class gather to drink, and are often associated with the culture of blue-collar America.
