Dolutegravir/lamivudine/tenofovir alafenamide
Dolutegravir/lamivudine/tenofovir alafenamide is a fixed-dose combination of antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. This combination is marketed under the brand name Dovato by ViiV Healthcare, a specialist HIV company majority owned by GlaxoSmithKline.
Composition[edit | edit source]
The combination consists of three active ingredients:
- Dolutegravir, an integrase inhibitor that prevents the virus from integrating its genetic material into the host cell.
- Lamivudine, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that blocks a key enzyme, reverse transcriptase, which the virus needs to reproduce.
- Tenofovir alafenamide, another NRTI that works in a similar way to lamivudine.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Dolutegravir/lamivudine/tenofovir alafenamide is used as a complete regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults who have no antiretroviral treatment history or to replace the current antiretroviral regimen in those who are virologically suppressed (HIV-1 RNA less than 50 copies per mL) on a stable antiretroviral regimen with no history of treatment failure and no known substitutions associated with resistance to the individual components of this drug.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue and insomnia. Serious side effects may include liver problems, kidney problems, lactic acidosis, severe skin rash and allergic reactions.
