Dominican refers to anything of, from, or related to the Dominican Republic, a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It may also refer to the Dominican Order, a Roman Catholic religious order founded by the Spanish priest Saint Dominic de Guzman in France.

History[edit | edit source]

The Dominican Republic was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and was named La Española, later becoming a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland. The Dominican Republic became independent in 1844.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Dominican culture is a mixture of the cultures of Spaniard colonists, African slaves, and Taíno natives. Spanish is the official language. Other aspects of the culture include music, sport, and cuisine.

Dominican Order[edit | edit source]

The Dominican Order, also known as the Order of Preachers, is a Catholic religious order founded by the Spanish priest Saint Dominic de Guzman in the early 13th century. The order is famed for its intellectual tradition, having produced many leading theologians and philosophers.
