Don Thompson (executive)

Don Thompson (born 1963) is an American businessman who served as the president and CEO of McDonald's Corporation from 2012 to 2015. He is also the founder and CEO of Cleveland Avenue, a venture capital firm.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Thompson was born in 1963 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in the city's North Side and attended Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

Career[edit | edit source]

McDonald's[edit | edit source]

Thompson began his career at McDonald's in 1990 as an electrical engineer. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the company's president and COO in 2010. In 2012, he was named CEO, becoming the first African American to hold the position. During his tenure, Thompson focused on modernizing McDonald's and expanding its global reach. However, he faced criticism for the company's declining sales and was replaced in 2015.

Cleveland Avenue[edit | edit source]

After leaving McDonald's, Thompson founded Cleveland Avenue, a venture capital firm focused on food, beverage, and restaurant technology. The firm has invested in several successful startups, including Beyond Meat and Farmer's Fridge.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Thompson is married and has two children. He is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace and has been recognized for his efforts by several organizations, including the National Black MBA Association.
