Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Career[edit | edit source]
Founding of Baxter International[edit | edit source]
In 1931, Donald Baxter founded the Baxter Healthcare Corporation, initially focusing on the production of intravenous (IV) solutions. At the time, the preparation of IV solutions was a cumbersome and risky process, often done manually in hospitals. Baxter's innovation was to manufacture these solutions in a sterile, ready-to-use form, significantly reducing the risk of infection and improving patient care.
Innovations in Intravenous Therapy[edit | edit source]
Baxter's company was the first to commercially produce IV solutions in glass bottles, which were later replaced by plastic bags. This innovation not only improved the safety and efficiency of IV therapy but also set the standard for future developments in the field. The company's products became essential in hospitals worldwide, particularly during World War II, when the demand for reliable IV solutions increased dramatically.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Donald Baxter's work laid the foundation for modern intravenous therapy and medical equipment manufacturing. Baxter International has grown into a global leader in healthcare, continuing to innovate in areas such as renal care, medication delivery, and biosurgery. Baxter's vision and entrepreneurial spirit have left a lasting legacy in the medical field.
