Donauturm
Donauturm (English: Danube Tower) is a prominent observation tower located in Vienna, Austria. It stands as one of the tallest structures in the country and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding areas.
History[edit | edit source]
The Donauturm was constructed between 1962 and 1964 to celebrate the Vienna International Garden Show. It was designed by architect Hannes Lintl and officially opened to the public on April 16, 1964. The tower has since become a significant landmark and a popular tourist attraction in Vienna.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The Donauturm stands at a height of 252 meters (827 feet), making it the tallest structure in Austria. The tower is constructed primarily of reinforced concrete and features a slender, cylindrical design. At the top of the tower, there are two revolving restaurants and an observation deck, which provide visitors with stunning views of Vienna and the Danube River.
Observation Deck[edit | edit source]
The observation deck is located at a height of 150 meters (492 feet) and is accessible via high-speed elevators. The deck offers a 360-degree view of Vienna, including notable landmarks such as the Stephansdom, the Prater, and the Vienna International Centre. On clear days, visitors can see as far as the Vienna Woods and the Leopoldsberg.
Revolving Restaurants[edit | edit source]
The Donauturm features two revolving restaurants, the "Panorama Restaurant" and the "Turm Restaurant," both of which offer a unique dining experience with a constantly changing view. The restaurants complete a full rotation every 26 to 39 minutes, allowing diners to enjoy a variety of vistas during their meal.
Bungee Jumping[edit | edit source]
The Donauturm is also known for its bungee jumping platform, which is located at a height of 152 meters (499 feet). It is one of the highest bungee jumping sites in Europe and attracts thrill-seekers from around the world.
Access and Transportation[edit | edit source]
The Donauturm is easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors can take the U-Bahn (subway) to the Kaisermühlen-VIC station and then transfer to a bus that stops near the tower. There is also ample parking available for those who prefer to drive.
