From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Donkey's Place is a renowned bar and restaurant located in Camden, New Jersey, United States. Established in 1943 by Robert Lucas, it is best known for its unique style of cheesesteak.

History[edit | edit source]

Donkey's Place was founded by Robert Lucas, a former professional boxer, in 1943. The name "Donkey's Place" was inspired by the nickname Lucas earned during his boxing career. The establishment has been a staple of the Camden community for over seven decades, serving its signature cheesesteak to locals and visitors alike.

Signature Dish[edit | edit source]

The signature dish of Donkey's Place is its distinctive cheesesteak. Unlike the traditional Philadelphia cheesesteak, which is typically served on a long, thin roll, the Donkey's Place cheesesteak is served on a round, poppy-seed kaiser roll. The sandwich is filled with thinly sliced steak, melted cheese, and onions. It is often accompanied by a side of French fries and a pickle.

Recognition[edit | edit source]

Donkey's Place has received numerous accolades for its cheesesteak. In 2015, the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain visited the establishment for his television show Parts Unknown, where he declared the Donkey's Place cheesesteak to be superior to any found in Philadelphia. This endorsement significantly increased the restaurant's popularity and recognition.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

After the death of Robert Lucas in 2015, his son Robert Lucas Jr. took over the operations of Donkey's Place. The establishment continues to be a beloved part of the Camden community, attracting both locals and tourists with its unique take on the cheesesteak.
