Door County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 30,066. The county seat is Sturgeon Bay. The county was created in 1851 and organized in 1861. It is named after the strait between the Door Peninsula and Washington Island. The dangerous passage, known as "Death's Door," is a translation of the French "Porte des Morts."

Geography[edit | edit source]

Door County is located on the Door Peninsula, which extends into Lake Michigan. The county has a total area of 2,370 square miles, of which 482 square miles is land and 1,888 square miles (80%) is water. The county is bordered by Kewaunee County to the south and Brown County to the southwest.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Door County experiences a humid continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers. The proximity to Lake Michigan moderates the climate, making it milder than other areas in Wisconsin.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 census, there were 30,066 people, 13,773 households, and 8,529 families residing in the county. The population density was 62.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Door County is largely driven by tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing. The county is known for its cherry and apple orchards, as well as its wineries. Tourism is a significant industry, with visitors attracted to the county's natural beauty, parks, and cultural events.

Door County is served by several school districts, including the Sturgeon Bay School District, Sevastopol School District, and Gibraltar Area School District. Higher education is provided by Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

The county is served by several major highways, including Wisconsin Highway 42 and Wisconsin Highway 57. The Washington Island Ferry Line provides transportation to Washington Island.
