Door County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on a peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. The county is known for its picturesque landscapes, charming small towns, and a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century.

Door County was established in 1851 and named after the strait between the Door Peninsula and Washington Island, known as "Death's Door" (from the French "Porte des Morts"). This name was given due to the dangerous passage that claimed many ships and lives.
The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi and Menominee. European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century, attracted by the region's natural resources and strategic location.

Door County covers a total area of 2,370 square miles, of which 482 square miles is land and 1,888 square miles is water. The county is characterized by its rugged coastline, sandy beaches, and numerous islands, including Washington Island and Rock Island.
