Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance
Air ambulance service in South West England
The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is a charity-funded air ambulance service that provides emergency medical services to the counties of Dorset and Somerset in South West England. The service operates a single helicopter and is tasked with delivering critical care to patients in need of urgent medical attention.
History[edit | edit source]
The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance was established in 2000 to provide rapid response medical care to the rural and urban areas of Dorset and Somerset. The service was created to address the need for swift medical intervention in emergencies where road access might be limited or time-consuming.
Operations[edit | edit source]
The air ambulance operates from Henstridge Airfield and is available 19 hours a day, 365 days a year. The service uses an AgustaWestland AW169 helicopter, which is equipped with advanced medical equipment and staffed by a team of highly trained paramedics and doctors.
The helicopter can reach any location within the two counties in approximately 20 minutes, providing rapid response to emergencies such as road traffic accidents, cardiac arrest, and other life-threatening situations.
Funding[edit | edit source]
The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is a charitable organization and relies entirely on public donations and fundraising activities to cover its operational costs. The service does not receive any direct government funding, making community support vital for its continued operation.
Crew[edit | edit source]
The air ambulance crew consists of a pilot, a critical care paramedic, and a critical care doctor. The team is trained to provide advanced pre-hospital care, including intubation, blood transfusion, and ultrasound diagnostics.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance has responded to thousands of incidents, saving countless lives and improving patient outcomes through rapid medical intervention. The service is an integral part of the emergency response network in the region, working closely with NHS hospitals and emergency services.
