Dorsomorphin
Dorsomorphin is a small molecule inhibitor that was originally identified as a potent inhibitor of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway. It is widely used in biological research to study the role of BMP signaling in various cellular processes.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Dorsomorphin functions by inhibiting the activity of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the BMP type I receptors, including ALK2, ALK3, and ALK6. By blocking these pathways, dorsomorphin can modulate cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis.
Applications in Research[edit | edit source]
Dorsomorphin has been extensively used in developmental biology to study the effects of BMP signaling on embryonic development. It has also been employed in stem cell research to investigate the differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into various lineages.
Developmental Biology[edit | edit source]
In developmental biology, dorsomorphin is used to elucidate the role of BMP signaling in the formation of tissues and organs. For example, it has been used to study the development of the nervous system, skeletal system, and cardiovascular system.
Stem Cell Research[edit | edit source]
In stem cell research, dorsomorphin is used to direct the differentiation of embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into specific cell types by modulating BMP signaling. This is crucial for understanding how stem cells can be used in regenerative medicine.
Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]
Dorsomorphin is a pyrimidine derivative with the chemical formula C24H25N5O. It is a small molecule with a molecular weight of 399.49 g/mol. The compound is typically used in its soluble form for biological assays.
Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]
As with many research chemicals, dorsomorphin should be handled with care. Appropriate safety measures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and goggles, should be employed when handling the compound.
