Dust mite

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Dust mite is a tiny bug that commonly lives in house dust. Dust mites belong to the arachnid family, which also includes spiders, ticks, and other species. They feed on the dead skin cells that humans and pets shed daily, which makes homes an ideal environment for them.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Dust mites are microscopic, eight-legged creatures that are 0.3 millimeters in length (7,000 can fit on a fingernail) and are invisible to the naked eye. They are found in virtually all homes, regardless of how clean they are. But they are particularly found in areas with high humidity levels and where human dander (dead skin cells) is present. Most dust mites die in low humidity levels or extreme temperatures.

Health Effects[edit | edit source]

Dust mites are one of the most common causes of allergies and asthma. Dust mite allergy symptoms caused by inflammation of nasal passages include sneezing, runny nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, nasal congestion, itchy nose, post nasal drip, cough, and facial pressure and pain. In severe cases, dust mite allergy can also cause asthma, which can cause difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pain, a whistling or wheezing sound when breathing out and trouble sleeping caused by shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing.

Prevention and Control[edit | edit source]

While it's not possible to completely eliminate dust mites from your home, you can significantly reduce their number. Here are some strategies:

  • Use allergen-proof bed covers. Cover your mattress and pillows in dust-proof or allergen-blocking covers.
  • Wash all bed linens regularly, using hot water.
  • Keep the humidity in your home less than 50 percent. Dust mites thrive in humid environments.
  • Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to maintain relative humidity levels.
  • Choose bedding, upholstery, and carpeting that are resistant to dust mites.
  • Regularly vacuum or steam-clean your carpets and upholstery.
