Dustin Michael McGowan (born March 24, 1982) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, and Miami Marlins.
Early life and amateur career[edit | edit source]
McGowan was born in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Long County High School in Ludowici, Georgia, where he played high school baseball. McGowan was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft.
Professional career[edit | edit source]
Toronto Blue Jays[edit | edit source]
McGowan made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on July 30, 2005. He showed promise as a young pitcher but faced numerous injuries throughout his career. In 2007, McGowan had a breakout season, finishing with a 12–10 record and a 4.08 earned run average (ERA).
In 2008, McGowan's season was cut short due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. He missed the entire 2009 and 2010 seasons recovering from the injury. McGowan returned to the Blue Jays in 2011 but continued to struggle with injuries.
Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins[edit | edit source]
After leaving the Blue Jays, McGowan signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015. He played one season with the Phillies before joining the Miami Marlins in 2016. McGowan had a solid season with the Marlins, posting a 2.82 ERA in 55 games. He returned to the Marlins in 2018 but was released later that year.
Pitching style[edit | edit source]
McGowan is known for his powerful fastball, which can reach speeds of up to 98 mph. He also throws a slider, curveball, and changeup.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
McGowan resides in Ludowici, Georgia with his family. He has been involved in various charitable activities, particularly those related to healthcare and youth sports.
