The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service Cymru (EMRTS Cymru) is a critical care service in Wales that provides advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care and inter-hospital transfer of critically ill patients. Established in 2015, EMRTS Cymru is a collaboration between the Welsh Government, the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, and the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.

History[edit | edit source]

EMRTS Cymru was launched in April 2015 as part of a strategic initiative to enhance emergency medical services in Wales. The service was developed to address the need for rapid access to critical care expertise and to improve outcomes for patients with life-threatening conditions. Since its inception, EMRTS Cymru has expanded its operations and now covers the entire Welsh territory.

Operations[edit | edit source]

EMRTS Cymru operates 24/7, providing both pre-hospital critical care and inter-hospital transfer services. The service is staffed by a team of highly trained consultants, registrars, and critical care practitioners who work alongside paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service.

Pre-hospital Critical Care[edit | edit source]

The pre-hospital critical care service involves the deployment of advanced medical teams to the scene of an emergency. These teams are equipped to deliver life-saving interventions such as advanced airway management, rapid sequence induction, and the administration of blood products. The service utilizes both road vehicles and helicopters to reach patients quickly.

Inter-hospital Transfer[edit | edit source]

EMRTS Cymru also provides inter-hospital transfer services for critically ill patients who require specialist care at tertiary centers. This includes the transfer of patients with severe trauma, cardiac emergencies, and other life-threatening conditions.

Fleet[edit | edit source]

The service operates a fleet of rapid response vehicles and helicopters. The helicopters are operated in partnership with the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, allowing for rapid deployment across the region. The aircraft are equipped with advanced medical equipment to support critical care interventions during flight.

Funding and Governance[edit | edit source]

EMRTS Cymru is funded by the Welsh Government and supported by charitable donations through the Wales Air Ambulance Charity. The service is governed by a board that includes representatives from the Welsh Government, the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, and the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Since its establishment, EMRTS Cymru has significantly improved the delivery of emergency medical care in Wales. The service has been credited with reducing mortality rates for critically ill patients and enhancing the overall efficiency of the emergency medical system.
