East Meadow

East Meadow is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in Nassau County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a total population of 38,132. East Meadow is an integral part of the Town of Hempstead, with a rich history and a vibrant community.

East Meadow's name is derived from being the meadow of Hempstead Plains east of the Meadow Brook (originally a brook, now replaced by a parkway of the same name). In the early 20th century, East Meadow was a grazing area for cattle and sheep. It wasn't until the post-World War II boom that the town was developed as a suburban residential community.

Geography[edit | edit source]

East Meadow is located in the central part of Nassau County. It is bounded on the west by Uniondale, on the north by Levittown, on the east by Wantagh, and on the south by Bellmore. The community is approximately 30 miles (48 km) east of New York City.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

According to the 2010 census, there were 38,132 people, 12,062 households, and 9,578 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 8,013.0 per square mile (3,093.1/km²).

Education[edit | edit source]

East Meadow is served by the East Meadow School District, which operates nine elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.

Several notable individuals have hailed from East Meadow, including Julius Rosenberg, convicted spy, and Rob Reiner, actor and director.
