East Timor, officially known as the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. East Timor is located between the Savu Sea to the north and the Timor Sea to the south, near the country of Indonesia to the west and Australia to the south-east.

History

East Timor's history can be traced back to prehistoric times, but it is more widely known for its struggle for independence from Portugal in 1975, followed by a brief but tumultuous annexation by Indonesia. The latter period was marked by widespread conflict and violence until the country achieved independence on 20 May 2002, becoming the first new sovereign state of the 21st century.

Geography

East Timor has a tropical climate and is characterized by its rugged mountainous terrain. The highest point is Mount Ramelau (Tatamailau), standing at 2,986 meters (9,797 ft). The country's natural beauty includes coral reefs, which are some of the most biodiverse in the world, making it a popular destination for diving and snorkeling.

Politics

The political system in East Timor is a unitary semi-presidential representative democratic republic. It has struggled with political instability since independence but has made significant progress in establishing a functioning government. The President of East Timor is the head of state, elected by popular vote, and the Prime Minister is the head of government.

Economy

East Timor's economy is largely based on agriculture, oil, and gas production. The country faces significant challenges, including a high poverty rate, unemployment, and a reliance on oil revenues which are subject to fluctuating global prices. Efforts are being made to diversify the economy and improve infrastructure and public services.

Culture

The culture of East Timor reflects a mix of indigenous, Portuguese, and Indonesian influences. Languages spoken include Tetum and Portuguese, which are the official languages, as well as Indonesian and English. The country is predominantly Catholic, a legacy of its Portuguese colonial past, with a rich tradition in music, dance, and art.

Education and Health

Education and health services in East Timor have been developing since independence. The government has focused on increasing access to primary education and healthcare, but the country still faces challenges in these areas, including a high child mortality rate and a need for improved educational resources and facilities.
