Edward Harrison Norton (born August 18, 1969) is an American actor and filmmaker. Known for his intense performances and versatility, Norton has received numerous accolades, including three Academy Award nominations.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Edward Norton was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Columbia, Maryland. He is the son of Lydia Robinson "Robin" Rouse, an English teacher, and Edward Mower Norton Jr., an environmental lawyer and conservation advocate. Norton attended Yale University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1991. During his time at Yale, he acted in university productions and was a competitive rower.

Career[edit | edit source]

Breakthrough and Early Success[edit | edit source]

Norton's breakthrough role came in 1996 with the film Primal Fear, where he played a young altar boy accused of murder. His performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination.

Following this success, Norton starred in American History X (1998), portraying a reformed neo-Nazi. His performance was critically acclaimed and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Continued Success[edit | edit source]

In 1999, Norton starred in Fight Club, directed by David Fincher. The film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, has since become a cult classic. Norton played the unnamed narrator opposite Brad Pitt.

Norton continued to take on diverse roles, including appearances in The Score (2001), 25th Hour (2002), and The Illusionist (2006).

Filmmaking[edit | edit source]

In addition to acting, Norton has ventured into filmmaking. He made his directorial debut with Keeping the Faith (2000), a romantic comedy in which he also starred. Norton has also been involved in the production and writing of several films.

Recent Work[edit | edit source]

Norton starred in Birdman (2014), a film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. His performance as a talented but difficult actor earned him another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Norton is known for his private nature and has been involved in various philanthropic efforts. He is a supporter of environmental causes and has served on the board of the Wilderness Society.
