Someone suffering from this extreme egocentric focus is an egomaniac. The condition is psychologically abnormal.

The egomaniac might be functioning perfectly in daily life and may even be successful, but at the expense of healthy relationships and personal happiness. Symptoms include:

  • Excessive preoccupation with personal power and prestige
  • Extreme lack of empathy
  • Feelings of superiority
  • Obsession with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
  • Belief of being unique and only understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people or institutions
  • Need for excessive admiration
  • Sense of entitlement
  • Willingness to take advantage of others to achieve personal goals
  • Envious of others or believes others are envious of them
  • Arrogant behaviors or attitudes

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of egomania is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is also associated with a number of other mental health conditions, including narcissistic personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for egomania often involves psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy. Medication may also be used to manage associated conditions or symptoms.
