Egomania

From WikiMD.com - Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Egomania is a psychological condition characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with one's self and applies to someone who follows their own ungoverned impulses and is possessed by delusions of personal greatness and feels a lack of appreciation. Someone suffering from this extreme egocentric focus is an egomaniac. The condition is psychologically abnormal.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The egomaniac might be functioning perfectly in daily life and may even be successful, but at the expense of healthy relationships and personal happiness. Symptoms include:

  • Excessive preoccupation with personal power and prestige
  • Extreme lack of empathy
  • Feelings of superiority
  • Obsession with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
  • Belief of being unique and only understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people or institutions
  • Need for excessive admiration
  • Sense of entitlement
  • Willingness to take advantage of others to achieve personal goals
  • Envious of others or believes others are envious of them
  • Arrogant behaviors or attitudes

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of egomania is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is also associated with a number of other mental health conditions, including narcissistic personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for egomania often involves psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy. Medication may also be used to manage associated conditions or symptoms.
