Electromagnetic

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Electromagnetic refers to the physical interaction that occurs between electrically charged particles. This interaction is mediated by electromagnetic fields, and it is one of the four fundamental interactions in nature. The other three are the strong interaction, the weak interaction, and gravitation.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Electromagnetic phenomena are defined in terms of the electromagnetic force, sometimes called the Lorentz force, which includes both electricity and magnetism as elements of one phenomenon. The electromagnetic force plays a major role in determining the internal properties of most objects in daily life.

Electromagnetic Fields[edit | edit source]

An electromagnetic field (also EMF or EM field) is a physical field produced by electrically charged objects. It affects the behavior of charged objects in the vicinity of the field. The electromagnetic field extends indefinitely throughout space and describes the electromagnetic interaction.

Electromagnetic Spectrum[edit | edit source]

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of frequencies (the spectrum) of electromagnetic radiation and their respective wavelengths and photon energies. The electromagnetic spectrum covers electromagnetic waves with frequencies ranging from below one hertz to above 10^25 hertz, corresponding to wavelengths from thousands of kilometers down to a fraction of the size of an atomic nucleus.

Electromagnetic Radiation[edit | edit source]

Electromagnetic radiation (EM radiation or EMR) refers to the waves (or their quanta, photons) of the electromagnetic field, propagating (radiating) through space, carrying electromagnetic radiant energy. It includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, (visible) light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.

Electromagnetic Induction[edit | edit source]

Electromagnetic induction is the production of an electromotive force across an electrical conductor in a changing magnetic field.
