Els Borst
Els Borst (March 22, 1932 – February 10, 2014) was a Dutch politician and medical scientist. She served as Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport for the Democrats 66 party in the Netherlands from 1994 to 2002. Borst was known for her efforts in the field of healthcare reform and her role in the legalization of euthanasia in the Netherlands.

Els Borst was born on March 22, 1932, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam, graduating in 1958. She specialized in pediatric immunology and later earned a doctorate in medical science.
Career[edit | edit source]
Borst began her career as a medical scientist, focusing on immunohaematology. She worked at the University Hospital Utrecht and later became the hospital's medical director. In 1994, she entered politics and was appointed as the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport for the Democrats 66 party.
As Minister, Borst was instrumental in implementing significant healthcare reforms in the Netherlands. She advocated for patient rights and worked to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. Borst is perhaps best known for her role in the legalization of euthanasia in the Netherlands, a controversial issue that she strongly supported.
Death[edit | edit source]
Els Borst died on February 10, 2014, at the age of 81. Her death was ruled a homicide, and a man was later convicted for her murder.
