Els Goulmy
Els Goulmy is a renowned immunologist and professor from the Netherlands. She is best known for her significant contributions to the field of transplantation immunology, particularly in the area of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and minor histocompatibility antigens (mHags).
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Els Goulmy was born in the Netherlands. She pursued her bachelor's and master's in Biology from the University of Amsterdam. She later obtained her PhD in Immunology from the same university.
Career[edit | edit source]
Goulmy began her career as a researcher at the Leiden University Medical Center where she focused on transplantation immunology. Her research primarily revolved around the role of HLA and mHags in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and transplant rejection.
In 1996, Goulmy became a professor at the Leiden University. She has published numerous scientific papers and has been a keynote speaker at various international conferences. Her work has significantly advanced our understanding of the immune response in transplantation.
Contributions to Immunology[edit | edit source]
Goulmy's research has led to the discovery of several mHags. These antigens are responsible for GVHD and transplant rejection. Her work has also led to the development of new strategies for the prevention and treatment of these conditions.
She has also contributed to the understanding of the role of HLA in the immune response. Her research has shown that certain HLA types are associated with a higher risk of transplant rejection.
Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]
In recognition of her contributions to the field of transplantation immunology, Goulmy has received numerous awards and honors. These include the Jean Dausset Award from the European Federation for Immunogenetics and the Rose Payne Award from the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
