From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Elsie Inglis (16 August 1864 – 26 November 1917) was an innovative Scottish doctor and suffragist. She is best known for setting up the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service Committee, a campaign for women's suffrage.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Inglis was born in the Indian town of Naini Tal but returned to Edinburgh as a child and was educated at the Edinburgh Institution and the University of Edinburgh, where she studied medicine.

Career[edit | edit source]

Inglis started her medical career in the New Hospital for Women in London, where she gained extensive experience in gynaecology. In 1894, she established a medical practice with fellow doctor Jessie MacGregor, and in 1904, she founded a maternity hospital for the poor in Edinburgh, which was later named Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital in her honour.

Scottish Women's Hospitals[edit | edit source]

Inglis is best known for her work with the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service Committee, an organisation she established during World War I. The committee sent teams of female doctors and nurses to war zones in France, Serbia, Russia, and elsewhere. Despite initial resistance from the British War Office, the hospitals were eventually recognised for their significant contribution to the war effort.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Inglis died of cancer in 1917, shortly after returning from a mission in Russia. Her work has been widely recognised and she is commemorated with plaques and statues in both Scotland and Serbia.
