Eluana

Eluana Englaro (25 November 1970 – 9 February 2009) was an Italian woman from Lecco, who entered a persistent vegetative state on 18 January 1992, following a car accident, and subsequently became the focus of a court battle between supporters and opponents of euthanasia.

Eluana Englaro was born on 25 November 1970 in Lecco, Italy. Little is known about her early life prior to the car accident that would change her life forever.

Accident and persistent vegetative state

On 18 January 1992, Englaro was involved in a car accident that left her in a persistent vegetative state. She was kept alive for 17 years through the use of a feeding tube.

Legal battle

Englaro's father, Beppino Englaro, began legal proceedings in 1999 to have his daughter's feeding tube removed, arguing that she would not have wanted to live in such a state. The case went through several courts, with the final decision being made by the Court of Cassation in 2008, which ruled in favor of Beppino Englaro.

Death and aftermath

Englaro died on 9 February 2009, three days after her feeding tube was removed. Her death sparked a national debate in Italy about the right to die, euthanasia, and the sanctity of life.
