Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka

Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka (26 September 1926 – 17 April 1967) was a Ghanaian military officer and politician. He played a significant role in the history of Ghana as a member of the National Liberation Council (NLC), which overthrew the government of Kwame Nkrumah in 1966.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was born on 26 September 1926 in Alakple, a town in the Volta Region of Ghana. He attended the Achimota School for his secondary education, where he excelled in academics and sports.

Military Career[edit | edit source]

Kotoka enlisted in the Gold Coast Regiment of the British Army in 1947. He received his initial military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Upon Ghana's independence in 1957, he became a key figure in the newly formed Ghana Armed Forces.

Role in the 1966 Coup[edit | edit source]

On 24 February 1966, Kotoka, along with other senior military officers, orchestrated a coup d'état that led to the overthrow of President Kwame Nkrumah. The coup was largely bloodless and resulted in the establishment of the National Liberation Council (NLC), with Kotoka serving as a member. The NLC aimed to restore economic stability and democratic governance in Ghana.

Death[edit | edit source]

Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was assassinated on 17 April 1967 during an attempted counter-coup led by junior officers. He was killed at the Kotoka International Airport, which was later named in his honor.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Kotoka is remembered for his role in the 1966 coup and his contributions to the Ghana Armed Forces. The Kotoka International Airport in Accra serves as a lasting tribute to his impact on Ghanaian history.
