Encased A Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic RRG cover

Encased is a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi role-playing video game developed by Dark Crystal Games and published by Prime Matter. The game is set in an alternate 1976, within a mysterious and dangerous structure known as the Dome. This structure, discovered in a remote desert, is filled with remarkable technologies and artifacts, as well as deadly traps and puzzles. Players take on the role of a character from one of the five disciplines of the CRONUS Corporation, exploring the Dome, interacting with other factions, and uncovering the secrets of this enigmatic construct.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Encased is an isometric RPG that emphasizes player choice and character development. The game features turn-based combat, a deep narrative, and an open world environment. Players can customize their characters by choosing from different skills, attributes, and backgrounds, which in turn affect their interactions with the world and its inhabitants. The game's factions play a significant role, with the player's actions and alliances influencing the story's outcome.

Story[edit | edit source]

The game begins with the player's character, a new recruit of the CRONUS Corporation, entering the Dome to explore and research its wonders and dangers. The Dome is divided into several sectors, each controlled by different factions with their own goals and ideologies. As the player progresses, they uncover the history of the Dome, the origins of the CRONUS Corporation, and the true nature of the anomalies and artifacts within. The narrative explores themes of power, the consequences of unchecked scientific exploration, and the human capacity for both cooperation and conflict.

Development[edit | edit source]

Development of Encased began in 2017 by Dark Crystal Games, a studio formed by industry veterans with a passion for classic RPGs. The game was inspired by the likes of Fallout, Divinity: Original Sin, and Baldur's Gate, aiming to blend the depth and complexity of these titles with its own unique setting and story. Encased was successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter, allowing the developers to expand their vision and engage with the community throughout the development process. It was released in 2021, receiving positive reviews for its engaging gameplay, rich narrative, and the freedom it offers players.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Critics praised Encased for its compelling world-building, complex characters, and the impact of player decisions on the game world. The turn-based combat system was also highlighted as a strong point, offering strategic depth and variety. However, some reviews noted technical issues and bugs that marred the experience for some players. Despite these criticisms, Encased has been lauded as a worthy addition to the sci-fi RPG genre, appealing to fans of the classics while introducing innovative elements.
