Environmentalism
Environmentalism is a broad philosophy, ideology and social movement regarding concerns for environmental protection and improvement of the health of the environment. This movement is centered on ecology, health, and human rights.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Environmentalism advocates the sustainable management of resources, and the protection (and restoration, when necessary) of the natural environment through changes in public policy and individual behavior. In its recognition of humanity as a participant in ecosystems, the movement is centered around ecology, health, and human rights.
History[edit | edit source]
The roots of environmentalism can be traced back to the enlightenment, in the recognition that the natural world is a critical aspect of human survival. The first large-scale environmental movements emerged in the late 19th century in response to industrialization, with the formation of the Sierra Club in 1892 and the National Parks Conservation Association in 1919.
Modern Environmentalism[edit | edit source]
Modern environmentalism emerged in the mid-20th century in response to significant environmental degradation - notably through pollution, and later through resource depletion. The environmental movement today is a diverse field with a multitude of views and agendas. It includes various types of conservationism, environmentalism, green politics, eco-socialism, eco-anarchism and green conservatism.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
Critics of environmentalism often argue that the movement is too radical, and that it ignores the economic benefits of industrialization and globalization. Others argue that it is not radical enough, and that it fails to challenge the fundamental structures of our society which contribute to environmental degradation.
