Equanimal was a Spanish animal rights organization that focused on the protection and welfare of animals. The organization was known for its activism and campaigns against animal cruelty, particularly in the context of bullfighting, hunting, and the use of animals in circuses.

History[edit | edit source]

Equanimal was founded in 2006 through the merger of two pre-existing animal rights groups, Alternativa para la Liberación Animal (ALA) and Derechos para los Animales (DPA). The organization aimed to create a stronger and more unified voice for animal rights in Spain.

Campaigns[edit | edit source]

Equanimal was involved in various campaigns to raise awareness about animal rights issues and to promote legislative changes. Some of their notable campaigns included:

  • Anti-Bullfighting Campaigns: Equanimal actively campaigned against bullfighting, a traditional but controversial practice in Spain. The organization sought to highlight the cruelty involved in bullfighting and to push for its abolition.
  • Hunting Protests: Equanimal organized protests and awareness campaigns against hunting, particularly focusing on the suffering of animals and the environmental impact of hunting practices.
  • Circus Animal Welfare: The organization campaigned against the use of animals in circuses, advocating for a ban on such practices due to the poor living conditions and treatment of circus animals.

Methods[edit | edit source]

Equanimal employed a variety of methods to achieve its goals, including:

  • Direct Action: The organization was known for its direct action tactics, such as protests, demonstrations, and public stunts to draw attention to animal rights issues.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Equanimal used media campaigns, educational programs, and public events to raise awareness about animal cruelty and to promote a more compassionate treatment of animals.
  • Legislative Advocacy: The organization worked to influence public policy and legislation related to animal welfare, lobbying for stronger animal protection laws and regulations.

Merger and Legacy[edit | edit source]

In 2012, Equanimal merged with another Spanish animal rights organization, Igualdad Animal, to form Animal Equality. The merger aimed to consolidate resources and efforts to create a more effective and influential animal rights movement.
