Erastus B. Wolcott
American surgeon and Civil War veteran
Erastus Bradley Wolcott (October 18, 1804 – January 5, 1880) was a prominent American surgeon and a pioneering figure in the field of medicine during the 19th century. He is best known for his contributions to surgical practices and his service as a surgeon during the American Civil War.

Erastus B. Wolcott was born in Goshen, Connecticut, on October 18, 1804. He was the son of Samuel Wolcott and Mary (Bradley) Wolcott. From a young age, Wolcott showed an interest in medicine, which led him to pursue a career in the field. He studied medicine under the guidance of Dr. Sylvester Graham, a noted physician of the time, and later attended medical lectures at the Yale School of Medicine.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Wolcott began his medical practice in Wolcott, Connecticut, before moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1848. In Milwaukee, he quickly established himself as a leading surgeon, known for his innovative techniques and dedication to patient care. He was instrumental in founding the Milwaukee County Hospital, where he served as chief surgeon.

Wolcott was a pioneer in the use of anesthesia in surgical procedures, which was a relatively new practice at the time. During the American Civil War, Wolcott served as a surgeon for the Union Army.
