Erica ciliaris is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae, commonly known as the Dorset heath or the Dorset red. It is native to western Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom, France, and Spain. This evergreen shrub is known for its vibrant red flowers and its ability to thrive in acidic and nutrient-poor soils.

Description[edit | edit source]

Erica ciliaris typically grows to a height of 30-60 centimeters. It has slender, needle-like leaves that are arranged in whorls around the stem. The leaves are covered in fine hairs, giving them a slightly fuzzy appearance. The flowers of Erica ciliaris are bell-shaped and range in color from deep red to pink. They are borne in clusters at the tips of the branches, creating a striking display during the flowering season.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Erica ciliaris is primarily found in heathland habitats, particularly in areas with acidic soils. It is commonly found in the coastal regions of the United Kingdom, especially in Dorset, which is where its common name, Dorset heath, originates. It also occurs in parts of France and Spain, where it thrives in similar environments.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Habitat of Erica ciliaris

Erica ciliaris is a popular choice for gardeners who wish to create a heathland or acid-loving plant display. It is well-suited to rock gardens, heather gardens, and containers. This species prefers full sun and well-drained, acidic soil. It is important to avoid overwatering, as Erica ciliaris is adapted to survive in nutrient-poor conditions.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Despite being relatively widespread, Erica ciliaris is considered a species of conservation concern in some areas. Loss of heathland habitats due to urbanization, agriculture, and afforestation has led to a decline in its population. Efforts are being made to protect and restore heathland habitats to ensure the survival of this species and other associated flora and fauna.
