Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker
German biochemist and academic
Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker (born 26 July 1941) is a prominent German biochemist and academic known for his contributions to the field of molecular biology and his leadership in scientific research organizations. He has played a significant role in shaping research policy in Germany and Europe.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He pursued his studies in chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), where he obtained his diploma in 1965. He then completed his doctoral studies at the University of Cologne, earning a Ph.D. in 1968 with a dissertation focused on the synthesis of nucleotides.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Winnacker began his academic career as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Arthur Kornberg. His research during this period focused on DNA replication and repair mechanisms, laying the groundwork for his future contributions to molecular biology.
Upon returning to Germany, Winnacker joined the faculty at the University of Munich (LMU Munich) in 1972. He became a full professor of biochemistry in 1977. His research group at LMU Munich made significant advances in understanding the molecular basis of genetic diseases and the regulation of gene expression.
Leadership in Research Organizations[edit | edit source]
In 1998, Winnacker was appointed as the Secretary General of the German Research Foundation (DFG), where he served until 2006. During his tenure, he was instrumental in promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration. He advocated for increased funding for basic research and the establishment of new research centers across Germany.
From 2007 to 2009, Winnacker served as the first Secretary General of the European Research Council (ERC), where he played a key role in setting up the organization and establishing its funding mechanisms. His leadership helped position the ERC as a major funding body for frontier research in Europe.
Contributions to Science and Policy[edit | edit source]
Winnacker has been a vocal advocate for the importance of basic research and the need for scientific freedom. He has published extensively on topics related to molecular biology, genetics, and research policy. His work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including membership in several prestigious scientific academies.
Later Career and Current Activities[edit | edit source]
After his tenure at the ERC, Winnacker continued to be active in science policy and advisory roles. He has served on various boards and committees, providing guidance on research strategy and innovation. He remains a respected figure in the scientific community, known for his commitment to advancing science and education.
