Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker (born 26 July 1941) is a prominent German geneticist and biochemist. He has made significant contributions to the field of molecular biology and has held various influential positions in scientific organizations.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He studied chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) and received his Ph.D. in 1968. His doctoral research focused on the synthesis of nucleotides.

Academic Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Winnacker conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In 1972, he returned to Germany and joined the University of Cologne as a professor of biochemistry.

In 1980, Winnacker became a professor at the University of Munich (LMU Munich), where he continued his research in molecular biology. His work primarily focused on the mechanisms of DNA replication and repair, as well as the regulation of gene expression.

Leadership Roles[edit | edit source]

Winnacker has held several key positions in scientific organizations. From 1998 to 2006, he served as the President of the German Research Foundation (DFG), where he played a crucial role in promoting scientific research in Germany. He was also the Secretary General of the European Research Council (ERC) from 2007 to 2009.

In addition to his roles in research organizations, Winnacker has been a member of various advisory boards and committees, including the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Max Planck Society.

Throughout his career, Winnacker has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science. These include the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bavarian Order of Merit, and honorary doctorates from several universities.
