Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He then completed his doctoral studies at the University of Cologne, earning a Ph.D. in 1968 with a dissertation focused on the synthesis of nucleotides.

Academic Career

Winnacker began his academic career as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Arthur Kornberg.
