Ernst Schmidt (14 November 1819 – 9 September 1888) was a notable German politician and physician. He was a prominent figure in the German revolutions of 1848–1849 and later became a member of the Reichstag in the German Empire.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Ernst Schmidt was born in Bamberg, Kingdom of Bavaria, on 14 November 1819. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Würzburg and the University of Munich, where he was influenced by the liberal ideas of the time. Schmidt completed his medical degree in 1843, after which he began practicing medicine in his hometown.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Schmidt's political career began during the tumultuous period of the German revolutions of 1848–1849. He was an ardent supporter of the democratic and liberal movements that sought to unify the German states and establish a constitutional government. Schmidt was elected to the Frankfurt Parliament, where he represented the liberal faction.

After the failure of the 1848 revolutions, Schmidt continued to be active in politics. He was a member of the Bavarian Landtag and later served in the Reichstag of the German Empire from 1871 to 1874. As a member of the Progressive Party, Schmidt advocated for civil liberties, social reforms, and the separation of church and state.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

In addition to his political activities, Schmidt was a respected physician. He practiced medicine in Bamberg and was known for his commitment to public health and medical education. Schmidt contributed to several medical journals and was involved in the establishment of medical societies in Bavaria.

During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Schmidt served as a military physician. His experience in the military furthered his interest in medical reforms and the improvement of sanitary conditions in military camps.

Ernst Schmidt retired from active politics in the late 1870s but remained engaged in public life through his writings and participation in civic organizations. He passed away on 9 September 1888 in Bamberg.

Schmidt's contributions to both medicine and politics were significant in shaping the liberal movements in Germany during the 19th century. His efforts in the Reichstag and his medical practice left a lasting impact on German society.
