From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Estradiol valerate/megestrol acetate is a combination medication that includes Estradiol valerate and Megestrol acetate. This medication is used in the treatment of various health conditions, primarily in the field of gynecology and endocrinology.

Composition[edit | edit source]

The medication is composed of two active ingredients: Estradiol valerate and Megestrol acetate. Estradiol valerate is a form of estrogen, a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries. Megestrol acetate is a synthetic derivative of the hormone progesterone.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Estradiol valerate/megestrol acetate is used in the treatment of several conditions, including menopausal symptoms, hormone replacement therapy, and certain types of breast cancer and prostate cancer. It is also used in the treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Estradiol valerate works by replacing the natural estrogen that the body can no longer produce after menopause. It helps to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Megestrol acetate works by interfering with the normal function of female hormones in the body. This can slow or stop the growth of certain types of breast cancer cells that need estrogen to grow.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medications, Estradiol valerate/megestrol acetate can cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, headache, and weight gain. More serious side effects can include blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and breast cancer.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before starting treatment with Estradiol valerate/megestrol acetate, patients should discuss their medical history with their healthcare provider. This medication should not be used in patients with a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, or certain types of cancer.
