Euryclides de Jesus Zerbini
Euryclides de Jesus Zerbini (10 May 1912 – 23 October 1993) was a pioneering Brazilian cardiac surgeon known for performing the first heart transplant in Latin America. He made significant contributions to the field of cardiovascular surgery and was a prominent figure in the development of medical education in Brazil.

Euryclides de Jesus Zerbini was born on 10 May 1912 in Guaratinguetá, São Paulo, Brazil. He pursued his medical degree at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he graduated in 1935. Zerbini continued his training in surgery and specialized in cardiothoracic surgery.

Zerbini began his career at the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade de São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), where he eventually became a professor of surgery. He was instrumental in establishing the Instituto do Coração (InCor), a leading center for cardiology and cardiac surgery in Brazil.
Heart Transplant[edit | edit source]
On 26 May 1968, Zerbini performed the first heart transplant in Latin America at the Hospital das Clínicas. This groundbreaking surgery placed him among the world's leading cardiac surgeons and marked a significant milestone in the history of medicine in Brazil.

Zerbini was dedicated to advancing medical education in Brazil. He played a key role in the development of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP) and mentored numerous students and young surgeons.
