Eve's pudding
Eve's Pudding is a traditional British dessert that is also known as Mother Eve's Pudding. The dessert is named after the biblical character Eve, who, according to the Book of Genesis, was the first woman on Earth. The pudding is a type of sponge cake that is baked on top of a layer of stewed apples.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Eve's Pudding are not well-documented, but it is believed to have been popular in Britain since at least the 18th century. The dessert's name is a reference to the biblical story of Adam and Eve, in which Eve is tempted by a serpent to eat an apple from the Tree of Knowledge. The use of apples in the pudding is a nod to this story.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
Eve's Pudding is made by first stewing apples, typically Bramley apples, with sugar. A sponge cake batter, made from flour, sugar, butter, and eggs, is then spread over the top of the stewed apples. The pudding is baked until the sponge cake is golden and the apples are soft. It is often served with custard or cream.
Variations[edit | edit source]
While the traditional version of Eve's Pudding uses apples, variations of the dessert may use other fruits, such as blackberries or rhubarb. Some versions also include spices, such as cinnamon or nutmeg, in the sponge cake batter.
