Sulconazole

(Redirected from Exelderm)

Sulconazole is an antifungal medication used primarily to treat skin infections caused by fungi. It belongs to the imidazole class of antifungal agents, which work by inhibiting the growth of fungi.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "Sulconazole" is derived from the chemical structure of the drug, which includes a sulfonyl group and an imidazole ring. The "-azole" suffix is common in many antifungal drugs.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Sulconazole is used to treat a variety of fungal skin infections, including tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm). It is also effective against Candida infections.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Sulconazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane. Without ergosterol, the cell membrane becomes permeable and unstable, leading to the death of the fungus.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of sulconazole include skin irritation, burning, and redness at the application site. Rare but serious side effects can include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, and swelling.
