Expeller pressing is a mechanical method for extracting oil from raw materials. This process is used to extract oil from oilseeds such as soybeans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and canola (rapeseed). Unlike solvent extraction, expeller pressing is a physical method that does not involve the use of chemical solvents, making the oil produced through this method more desirable for health-conscious consumers.

The process of expeller pressing involves the raw materials being fed into an expeller press, a machine that applies continuous mechanical pressure to extract oil. The raw materials are first cleaned and then heated to a temperature that facilitates oil extraction. The heating process also helps in deactivating enzymes that could spoil the oil. Once heated, the materials are placed into the expeller press where high pressure is applied. The pressure causes the oil to be squeezed out from the raw material and collected. The remaining solid substance, known as cake or meal, is often used as animal feed or in some cases, further processed to extract more oil.
